Excision of a Neck Mass with Neck Dissection

Excision of a Neck Mass with Neck Dissection is a surgical procedure performed to remove an abnormal mass in the neck, along with surrounding lymph nodes and tissue, when there is concern for cancer or spread of disease. The neck mass excision involves surgically removing the identified lump or tumor, which may be benign or malignant. If there is suspicion or confirmation of cancer—either originating in the neck or spread from nearby regions such as the head or throat—a neck dissection is also performed. This involves removing lymph nodes and surrounding tissue in specific areas of the neck (levels I–VI) to evaluate for cancer spread and help prevent recurrence. The extent of the neck dissection (selective, modified, or radical) depends on the size, location, and type of tumor, as well as involvement of nearby structures. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and the removed tissue is sent to pathology for further analysis. This combined approach is both diagnostic and therapeutic, aiming to remove all detectable disease.

Patients are placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision along a natural crease in the neck to access the mass. The mass is carefully separated from surrounding tissues, and as part of a neck dissection, additional lymph nodes and possibly surrounding structures are removed to check for cancer spread. Blood vessels and nerves are preserved whenever possible. Once all targeted tissue is removed, the incision is closed with sutures. In many cases, a temporary surgical drain is placed to prevent fluid buildup. After surgery, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort. The drain is typically removed within a few days. Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the dissection but usually ranges from one to two weeks for initial healing.
