Knee with Lateral Release or Microfracture Procedure

Lateral release surgery, commonly referred to as keyhole surgery, is a procedure performed to realign the kneecap (patella). This procedure is an option for patients who have a dislocated kneecap that does not go back into place on its own. The arthroscopic approach to knee surgery offers many benefits, including its less invasive nature, quicker recovery time, and smaller incisions. During this procedure, a small camera, known as an arthroscope, is used to closely monitor the knee joint and ensure a successful procedure.

ĀæCuando es necesario este procedimiento?

Candidates for arthroscopic lateral release are individuals who have suffered a severe injury to the kneecap. Upon diagnosis, your doctor will likely begin by suggesting a course of conservative therapies. This includes, but is not limited to, physical therapy, pain medications, and rest. If patients still experience debilitating pain, surgical intervention may become necessary.

Candidates frequently experience these symptoms:

  • Severe pain and swelling
  • A bump on the outside of the knee
  • Dificultad para caminar

During an arthroscopic lateral release, the surgeon will insert a tiny camera, known as an arthroscope, into the knee joint through small incisions. The arthroscope allows the surgeon to visualize the structures within the joint and accurately diagnose any abnormalities. Following this, specialized instruments are introduced through additional incisions to perform the lateral release. During this procedure, tight or scarred tissues on the outer side of the kneecap are carefully released, allowing for better realignment of the kneecap (patella).

After the procedure, patients may experience pain in the knee, which can be managed through a course of pain medication provided by the doctor. When the swelling and discomfort subsides, patients will begin a physical therapy program to build muscle, regain stability, and improve flexibility.
