Complete Synovectomy Procedure

A complete synovectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the entire synovial membrane. The synovial membrane lines the inner surface of joints and produces synovial fluid which helps lubricate the joint. This procedure is often performed to treat chronic inflammation or overgrowth of the synovium. When the synovium is inflamed, it can limit range-of-motion and functionality.

Individuals that suffer from chronic inflammation of the knee joint’s synovium can benefit from a complete synovectomy because it can reduce joint stiffness, alleviate pain, and stop the progression of joint damage. A complete synovectomy differs from a partial synovectomy, where only part of the synovium is removed.

¿Cuando es necesario este procedimiento?

Patients may consider a complete synovectomy of the knee joint if they experience persistent, debilitating pain as a result of arthritis or another condition causing joint damage. If patients begin to experience debilitating knee pain, doctors will initially recommend a course of conservative therapies including physical therapy, lifestyle changes, and pain medication. However, if non-surgical approaches are ineffective at providing sufficient pain relief, patients may consider surgical intervention. A complete synovectomy is often recommended if therapies do not work and the doctor deems full removal of the synovium is necessary.

A complete synovectomy of the knee joint may be necessary if:

  • The patient suffers debilitating knee pain
  • The knee joint’s synovial membrane is inflamed
  • Conservative therapies do not provide pain relief
  • A partial synovectomy would not entirely solve the problem

Meet our Knee Doctors

Qué esperar

Prior to the procedure, the doctor will go through a series of examinations to ensure the patient is a good candidate for a complete synovectomy of the knee joint. Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The orthopedic surgeon will make an incision around the knee joint and will then carefully remove all the synovial tissue. Once the goal of the procedure is achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

After the procedure, patients may experience pain around the incision site, but this can be managed through doctor-prescribed pain medications. Patients must avoid putting weight on the knee joint for 4-6 weeks to ensure healing. When the patient feels more comfortable with the operated-on knee, they will undergo physical therapy. Physical therapy is an integral part of the recovery process and it is necessary to ensure they have sufficient function and range of motion. A complete recovery can usually be achieved between 4-8 months.
