Distal bicep reattachment is a surgical procedure that intends to restore the function of the distal bicep tendon. An injury to this tendon can result in significant arm weakness and can prevent individuals from participating in certain activities. This injury can occur due to overuse or as a result of a sudden, forceful, or traumatic injury. The goal of this procedure is to restore strength and anatomical alignment between the bicep muscle and forearm bone. To achieve this, an orthopedic surgeon will reattach the torn tendon to its original position on the forearm. 

If patients are suffering from a torn distal bicep tendon, they should seek medical attention immediately. Undergoing diagnostic testing is the only true way to know what treatment steps you should take. Sometimes, this injury can be treated through a course of physical therapy, whereas other cases may require surgical intervention.

Patients may consider this procedure if they have a severe injury to the distal bicep that is not improving with conservative therapies. Typically, candidates for this procedure experience symptoms including sharp elbow pain, weakness when lifting the arm, and swelling around the elbow joint. 

Patients may consider surgical intervention for the following reasons: 

  • They experience extreme symptoms as the result of a distal bicep injury
  • Their symptoms do not improve through conservative therapies
  • Their injury is too severe and requires immediate surgical intervention

Patients are under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision near the upper forearm. The surgeon will reattach the distal bicep tendon to the radius bone using sutures. When the goal of the procedure is met, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from anesthesia. 

After the procedure, patients should expect a recovery time spanning three to four months. However, patients can typically resume most activities after one month of immobility of the arm. Patients will be given pain medication to manage discomfort and a sling to ensure the arm stays immobile. This will help to ensure a successful and comfortable recovery. Overall, a patient’s commitment to following their recovery instructions is reflected in how the arm heals.
