Bursectomy (Elbow) Procedure
A bursectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the bursa, the fluid-filled pads that cushion the elbow joints. The bursa may need to be removed if it becomes inflamed or infected. When the bursa is inflamed, it can cause debilitating pain and other symptoms that prevent the individual from moving comfortably. If the bursa is infected, prompt treatment is necessary to ensure the infection does not spread to other areas of the body.Ā
Depending on the reason for a bursectomy, the surgery may differ in nature. Before a bursectomy procedure, all patients must work with their doctor to ensure this is the best treatment option for their specific condition.
ĀæCuando es necesario este procedimiento?
Patients may consider undergoing a bursectomy if conservative treatment efforts have failed to offer relief from their infection or inflammation. Typically, conservative treatment methods like rest, ice packs, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy are employed initially. However, if these measures prove ineffective and symptoms persist or worsen over time, a bursectomy may be warranted.

PreparaciĆ³n para el procedimiento
Before a bursectomy procedure, the patient will undergo diagnostic testing and a health history review to ensure they are a candidate for surgery. The patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision along the elbow joint to access the bursa. The surgeon will then use specialized tools to carefully remove the bursa. If there is damaged tissue in the surrounding area, this may be removed as well. Next, the surgeon will close the incision and ensure bleeding is controlled.Ā
After the procedure, patients will undergo a brief recovery period. In the days following the procedure, swelling, bruising, and redness around the incision site is normal and should be expected. These symptoms can be managed with pain medications and ice packs. After the area has healed, patients are expected to undergo physical therapy to ensure they function properly. It is important that patients do not jump into intense physical activity, as complete healing can take up to a month.
