Arthroscopic Labral Repair (shoulder; implants not included) Procedure

Arthroscopic labral repair is a minimally invasive procedure that treats labral tears in the shoulder. Like other types of tears, shoulder labral tears are most commonly a result of overuse or traumatic injury. Oftentimes, labral tears are accompanied by other shoulder conditions, such as a dislocation. Patients may consider an arthroscopic labral repair procedure if they have a labral tear that becomes debilitating and prevents them from participating in necessary activities. An arthroscopic procedure offers a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open surgery, as it requires a much smaller incision.Ā

ĀæCuando es necesario este procedimiento?

Patients should visit their primary care physician as soon as they begin noticing any symptoms relating to shoulder pain. Your primary care physician can perform a physical examination and will refer you to an orthopedic surgeon if they find it necessary. The orthopedic surgeon will perform diagnostic tests, including medical imaging and physical examinations to determine a diagnosis. If the orthopedic surgeon determines you have a labral tear in the shoulder, they may recommend conservative therapies. However, if the tear is severe enough or it does not improve after conservative therapies, surgical intervention may be necessary.

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making two smaller incisions at the shoulder joint. A small camera, known as an arthroscope, will be inserted into one of the incisions and will allow the surgeon to monitor the area throughout the process. The surgeon will use specialized tools to remove loose fragments and repair the torn labrum. Once the procedure is complete, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.Ā

Patients will be given pain medication to manage any postoperative pain. Patients are expected to wear a brace for 4-6 weeks following their labral repair surgery. This will ensure immobility, as well as protect the shoulder from developing further injury. After the initial recovery process, patients will join a physical therapy program to rebuild muscle and ensure the shoulder is recovering successfully.Ā
