Manipulation Shoulder Procedure

A shoulder joint procedure is a surgical procedure in which the medical professional manipulates the shoulder joint to relieve pain and improve mobility. During this procedure, the patient is typically placed under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort. Depending on the patient’s specific condition, the nature of the manipulation may vary. However, it typically involves the application of pressure on the shoulder joint or assessing the range of motion. This procedure is often recommended to patients who suffer from conditions like frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries, or dislocations. Immediately after the procedure, patients may experience pain due to shoulder manipulation. However, this discomfort should go away in the days following and patients usually notice prompt results.

After a diagnosis of a shoulder condition, the specialist will typically recommend the patient explore conservative therapies. This includes but is not limited to, physical therapy, pain medications, and hot/cold therapy. If the patient does not notice any relief after these therapies, they may be a candidate for shoulder manipulation. A shoulder manipulation procedure is typically an option for patients who experience recurring shoulder joint stiffness and limited range of motion due to their condition. Patients may be a candidate for a shoulder manipulation procedure if:

  • Conservative methods were ineffective.
  • They experience consistent shoulder pain.
  • The shoulder joint has a limited range of motion.

During a shoulder manipulation procedure, the patient will be under general anesthesia. However, the surgeon will not make an incision in order to perform this procedure. The anesthesia is solely used to ensure the patient does not experience any pain during the procedure itself. Once the anesthesia is active, the specialist will begin by moving the shoulder through a full range of motion course to break up scar tissue and increase mobility. The specialist will then manipulate the shoulder to decrease the patient experiences when using their shoulder.  
 
After the procedure, the patient will likely experience some pain in the days following. This is because the joint is not used to being moved to the degree it was during the procedure. Oftentimes, patients are given pain medications to manage pain. Aside from the discomfort, the patients should notice immediate results in terms of range of motion.
