Subacromial Decompression Procedure
Subacromial decompression is a surgical procedure performed to alleviate pain caused by shoulder impingement. An impinged shoulder occurs when a tendon or bursa in the subacromial area becomes inflamed, leading to compression and pain when moving the shoulder. During the procedure, the surgeon will remove any excess tissue or bone that is causing impingement, with the goal of creating more space in the subacromial area.Ā
This procedure is often performed using an arthroscope, a small camera that allows the surgeon to monitor the area during the process. An arthroscopic approach is considered to be less invasive than a traditional approach because it allows for a smaller incision.
ĀæCuando es necesario este procedimiento?
Subacromial decompression is commonly recommended for patients struggling with severe shoulder impingement. If conservative therapies including pain medications and physical therapy do not offer relief, patients may consider surgical intervention.
Patients may be a candidate for subacromial decompression if:
- They suffer from shoulder impingement
- Lifting the arm causes significant pain
- Diagnostic imaging shows that surgical intervention is necessary
- Conservative efforts have failed

PreparaciĆ³n para el procedimiento
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making small incisions to access the shoulder joint. In an arthroscopic approach, a small camera is inserted through one of these incisions to allow the surgeon to closely monitor the area throughout the procedure. Next, the surgeon will use specialized tools to remove excess tissue that is causing impingement, as well as shave the inflamed bursa. When the surgeon has fixed any abnormalities, they will close the incisions and the patient will be removed from anesthesia.Ā
After the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience pain at the incision site. This can be managed through pain medication, either prescription or over-the-counter. Patients are often recommended to undergo physical therapy to restore range of motion and ensure proper function.Ā
