Cubital Tunnel Release Procedure
Cubital tunnel release is a surgical procedure performed to alleviate symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome. This condition is known to cause pain, numbness, and muscle weakness in the hands and forearm due to compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. During this procedure, the surgeon will open up the cubital tunnel, which is a passageway on the inner side of the elbow, and will release any structures causing compression.
Patients experiencing debilitating symptoms should consult their primary care physician to find an effective treatment plan. Oftentimes, patients can find relief through conservative efforts including bracing and anti-inflammatory medications. If these treatments are ineffective, patients may consider undergoing cubital tunnel release surgery.
¿Cuando es necesario este procedimiento?
There are a few different reasons why doctors may recommend a cubital tunnel release procedure. If patients experience severe cubital tunnel syndrome symptoms that do not go away through conservative therapies, surgery may become an option. Severe cubital tunnel syndrome can hinder an individual’s ability to hold objects or complete certain tasks. If cubital tunnel syndrome starts to affect the patient’s lifestyle, they must seek medical treatment.
Cubital tunnel release surgery is often recommended if:
- Patients experience severe symptoms
- Conservative treatments were ineffective
- The patient’s lifestyle is negatively affected

Preparación para el procedimiento
Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision along the inner elbow to access the ulnar nerve. The surgeon will then identify and release structures such as ligaments and fascial bands to relieve pressure on the ulnar nerve.
After the procedure, the recovery period will vary depending on the severity of the patient’s condition. In general, patients can expect to wear a brace or splint in the days following. This will ensure the area heals properly. Doctors often also recommend physical therapy and a course of pain medication. Typically, the recovery period can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.
