About Distal Interphalangeal Joint Fusion
This procedure is typically performed on patients who suffer from severe pain or discomfort in their fingers due to conditions such as arthritis or severely damaged ligaments, tendons, or bones. During the surgery, the surgeon will remove any damaged cartilage and bone fragments from the affected joint before fusing it with screws or plates. Once fused, the bones will heal together over time forming a solid joint that is incapable of movement.
Although this procedure may limit some mobility of the finger, it can significantly reduce arthritic pain and improve function. The risks associated with this surgery are minimal when performed by a skilled experienced surgeon but should be discussed with your doctor before undergoing treatment.

Preparación para el procedimiento
The patient will be under general or local anesthesia so they will not experience any discomfort. During the procedure, the orthopedic surgeon will make an incision along the finger to access the joint. Next, the cartilage will be removed from both sides. The surgeon will then secure the bones together using screws, pins, or a plate. The area will then be sealed using sutures. The bones will heal together over the following weeks.
After the procedure, the surgeon will provide you will important instructions for a safe, effective recovery. The finger will be in a splint to ensure immobility during the recovery process.
