Ganglion Excision Procedure

Ganglion excision is a procedure that involves the surgical removal of ganglia, which are fluid-filled cysts that often develop on tendons or joints in the wrist or hands. Ganglion cysts alone do not cause pain, however, patients may experience pain if the cyst begins pressuring a nearby nerve. Pain associated with a ganglion cyst is also known to intensify with activity. A ganglion excision procedure will remove the ganglion cyst and will lower the chances of the cyst returning.

Oftentimes, surgical intervention is not necessary for a ganglion cyst. Many patients with this condition do not experience much pain and the cyst will go away with time. However, in the case that patients begin experiencing persistent, debilitating pain as a result of the ganglion cyst, it may become an option.

If patients experience pain as a result of a ganglion cyst, they should consult their doctors about treatment options. Oftentimes, patients can find relief through aspiration, a procedure in which a needle is inserted into the ganglion cyst to drain the fluid. This will shrink the cyst and prevent it from becoming inflamed and pressuring nerves. However, in the case aspiration is ineffective at providing lasting relief, ganglion excision may become necessary.

Qué esperar

The surgeon will begin by administering local or regional anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure. Next, the surgeon will make a small incision over the ganglion cyst to access it. The surgeon will then drain the cyst and remove the sac from the tendon. The removal of the sac also prevents the ganglion cyst from developing again. Once the procedure is complete, the surgeon will close the incision.
 
After the procedure, patients may be given a splint or brace to prevent excessive movement in the wrist. Physical therapy may be recommended to help patients regain strength and improve mobility. Patients can typically expect a full recovery within 7-10 weeks.
