Lesion excision of the tendon sheath or joint capsule is a surgical procedure to remove an abnormal growth or cyst from the hand or wrist. These growths are quite common and form as the result of part of the joint capsule or tendon sheath bulging out and filling with fluid. When this happens, it can result in discomfort and swelling.

Patients may consider lesion excision for a growth on the tendon sheath or joint capsule if:
- The lesion becomes painful
- The lesion causes nerve compression
- The lesion will not respond to conservative management methods

Qué esperar
Local or general anesthesia will be used to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure. This procedure can be performed endoscopically using a small microscope or through an open incision. The surgeon will begin by making an incision over the tendon. Next, the surgeon will remove the sheath or loosen it, depending on the unique growth. Once the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgery team will monitor the patient as they are removed from the anesthesia.
After the procedure, the wrist will be dressed. Patients may experience some discomfort which is manageable through a course of anti-inflammatory pain medications. Physical therapy is often used to reintroduce movement to the joint and ensure proper healing.
