Proximal row carpectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the carpal bones in the wrist. This procedure is most commonly performed to treat patients who suffer from severe arthritis. Arthritis, specifically osteoarthritis, causes cartilage to wear away, which prevents the bones from properly functioning and can result in discomfort and stiffness. For patients who have not been able to find relief from conservative arthritis therapies such as medication or physical therapy, a doctor may recommend a proximal row carpectomy.

Patients who experience pain as a result of arthritis in the wrist should consult their doctors to discuss treatment options. Typically, your doctor will initially recommend a course of painkillers to see if this conservative option provides meaningful relief. Sometimes, patients are recommended to wear splints to prevent the wrist from moving in a way that causes pain. If these treatments are ineffective, doctors may recommend proximal row carpectomy surgery.

Qué esperar

Patients are under regional or general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision at the back of the wrist to access the arthritic region. The surgeon will then remove the scaphoid, lunate, and triquetrum bones using a specialized approach while preserving the surrounding nerves, tendons, and other structures. The surgeon will then close the incision and the patient will wake up.

Patients are typically allowed to return home on the same day of the procedure. Patients will be prescribed pain medication to manage any discomfort they experience after the procedure. Additionally, patients will be given a splint to prevent movement and should keep the hand elevated as much as possible in the week following surgery. When patients begin to regain movement, they are recommended to visit a physical therapist to regain function and mobility.
