Total Thyroidectomy with Bilateral Neck Dissection Procedure
Total thyroidectomy with bilateral neck dissection is a surgical procedure to remove the entire thyroid gland, as well as the surrounding lymph nodes. This procedure is most commonly performed on patients who have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and conservative treatments have not been able to provide a sufficient solution.
During the bilateral neck dissection part of the procedure, lymph nodes located on both sides of the neck are systematically removed and examined for signs of metastasis. Total thyroidectomy with bilateral neck dissection is a significant intervention that necessitates careful planning and consideration of each patient’s case to ensure optimal outcomes.
¿Cuando es necesario este procedimiento?
A total thyroidectomy with bilateral neck dissection procedure is necessary when there is a diagnosis of thyroid cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes in the neck. This procedure is considered when other treatment options such as radioactive iodine therapy or partial thyroidectomies do not effectively eradicate all cancerous cells.
Neck dissection is not always necessary during a thyroidectomy. It is only recommended if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. The decision of the surgical approach will vary from patient to patient, and it is dependent on their health and the extent of the cancer.

Qué esperar
Depending on the reason for the thyroidectomy, the exact approach may vary. However, the following is a general description that can help you understand what you should expect before a thyroidectomy procedure. Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision across the front of the neck to access the thyroid gland as well as the lymph nodes. The surgeon will carefully identify and remove both lobes of the thyroid, as well as any affected lymph nodes on both sides of the neck. When the goal of the procedure is achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.
Immediately after the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience discomfort at the incision site. Patients are typically given pain medications to manage any discomfort and a hormone replacement medication to stabilize hormones. This is a serious surgery, and patients must be properly educated on the symptoms they may experience and know when to visit their doctor. Follow-up appointments are necessary to ensure proper healing.
