This procedure is often performed to treat recurring cases of tonsillitis, sleep apnea, or other conditions caused by breathing problems.\u00a0<\/p>

Bilateral myringotomy with tubes, commonly referred to as BM-T, is a procedure that involves the surgical insertion of tubes into the ear drums to prevent fluids from accumulating. A BM-T surgery is performed on children whose ears do not drain which can cause recurring infections. This procedure is an excellent solution because it allows patients to treat multiple issues during a singular surgery. Doctors will typically recommend a tonsillectomy and BM-T procedure if the patient is not able to find relief through conservative treatments, such as antibiotics.\u00a0<\/p>

    During a tonsillectomy and BM-T procedure, the patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort. The surgeon will access the tonsils through the mouth and will use specialized tools to separate them from the surrounding tissue. The surgeon will use sutures to ensure bleeding is controlled. Next, while the patient is still under anesthesia, the surgeon will begin the bilateral myringotomy with a tube procedure. The surgeon will begin this portion of surgery by making tiny incisions in the eardrums using a special instrument to drain excess fluids from the middle ear. Next, they will insert small, temporary tubes into the eardrums to allow them to drain over a period of time. Typically, these tubes will fall out on their own between 6-12 months. If the tubes do not come out on their own, surgical removal is a simple solution.\u00a0<\/p>

    Patients will likely experience discomfort in the days following the procedure. Doctors will prescribe pain medications to help patients manage any pain. Patients are instructed to eat soft foods in the days following the procedure as their throat will be sore from the tonsillectomy. It is also important that patients keep their ears dry for the first few days as this could interrupt the healing process.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
