Shoulder arthroplasty, also known as shoulder replacement, is a surgical procedure that aims to restore the function of the shoulder joint. This procedure is often considered for patients that experience debilitating pain as a result of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or injury. The overall goal of this procedure is to restore function, improve mobility, and alleviate painful symptoms.<\/p>

The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint, meaning that the rounded top of one bone fits within the rounded cavity of another. When the articular cartilage is damaged as a result of arthritis, this joint becomes less functional, and using the shoulder can become very painful. Total shoulder arthroplasty involves the replacement of the entire joint using metal or plastic parts.     During shoulder arthroscopy, the patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout. The surgeon will begin by making an incision along the shoulder to gain access to the shoulder joint. Next, the surgeon will carefully remove the damaged head of the humorous and make a hole in it. After this, the surgeon will reshape the glenoid and make holes in it as well. The socket part of the prosthesis will be placed into the holes created in the glenoid. The ball part of the prosthesis will be placed into the hole made in the humorous. The surgeon will then slide the prosthesis together so it acts as a functioning joint. When the procedure is complete, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from anesthesia. After the procedure, patients may experience pain at the incision site and shoulder. This can be managed using prescribed pain medications. Shortly after the procedure, patients will begin a physical therapy program to improve mobility, increase function, and relearn certain movements.
