Overview
An ear tube removal is a procedure to move small tubes that have been surgically inserted into the eardrum to treat recurring ear infections or fluid buildup. This procedure is typically performed on children since this is the population that most commonly requires ear tubes. This is performed on an outpatient basis and it only takes a few minutes to complete.

About Ear Tube Removals
After the procedure, patients may experience mild discomfort or additional drainage from their ear for a few days but can return to normal activity soon after. This procedure is generally very safe, and only in rare cases do patients experience any risks, such as perforation of the eardrum. Since this procedure is typically performed on children, it is important for the parents to keep track of their ear tubes and consult with the doctor when they still have not fallen out on their own.
When is this Procedures Necessary?
Ear tubes typically fall out 12-16 months after insertion. By this time, the child’s ears should have healed and the drainage should have stopped. In some cases, the ear tubes will not fall out on their own, despite the child’s symptoms stopping. If the tubes do not fall out after three years, the patient may be a candidate for an ear tube removal procedure. Sometimes, the ear tubes will have to be removed early if the child experiences recurring chronic infections.

Preparing for Your Procedure
Depending on the material of the ear tube, the ear tube removal procedure will be slightly different. If the tube is flexible, it could be removed in an office setting. However, if it is stiffer, it may require a brief anesthetic to make it comfortable for the patient. After the removal, the patient may notice additional drainage, but this should go away after a few days. Parents should pay extra attention to their child’s ears after the procedure to ensure they are comfortable and healing properly.
