Inner Ear - Stapedectomy Procedure

A stapedectomy is a procedure used to treat hearing loss caused by otosclerosis. This refers to the condition in which the stape is damaged, which is the smallest bone in the body. This bone is located in the middle ear and is responsible for transmitting sound waves. When damaged, the sound cannot travel, resulting in hearing impairment.

During this procedure, the surgeon will remove the stapes bone and put in an artificial device. The prosthesis will be able to form vibrations, which the stapes bone was unable to do. This will allow patients to regain hearing. This procedure is very successful and the majority of patients notice immediate results.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

Patients may consider a stapedectomy if they are suffering from hearing loss as a result of otosclerosis. This condition occurs when the stapes bone fuses with surrounding tissue, preventing the bone from transmitting sound waves.

Otosclerosis can be treated in two ways. While some patients choose to get hearing aids, others may learn towards a stapedectomy procedure. Depending on your preferences and hearing ability, you and your doctor can make an informed decision together.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Prior to your procedure, your surgeon will evaluate your condition to ensure a stapedectomy is the right option for you. There are multiple instruments and diagnostic tests that can examine your hearing, and your doctor will likely utilize these to determine your eligibility.

Patients will be under general anesthesia during the procedure to ensure their comfort. The surgeon will either access the eardrum with an instrument or through an incision. They will first lift the eardrum to access the middle ear bones, specifically the stapes bone. They will then replace the damaged bone with the device. The surgeon will complete the surgery by putting the eardrum back in place and placing the necessary bandages for healing.

Patients can return home after a stapedectomy procedure. On average it will take roughly 5-8 weeks for the ear to fully heal. Patients should ensure they follow all instructions and use any antibiotics or medications provided. It is very important to be extra cautious, as the ear is vulnerable during the recovery phase.
