Excise Intranasal Lesion Procedure

Excise intranasal lesion is the surgical removal or biopsy of a growth or abnormality present in the nasal cavity. This procedure is typically performed by an ENT specialist and is used to diagnose and treat nasal conditions. Excise intranasal lesion procedures can identify many abnormalities including tumors, infections, obstructions, and persistent nasal symptoms.

This procedure is incredibly important when it comes to diagnosing different conditions. If patients go for prolonged periods without treating certain abnormalities, it can have very severe consequences.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Patients will undergo an excise intranasal lesion procedure if they have an irregular growth in their nasal cavity that a doctor is unsure about. Oftentimes, it is difficult for doctors to recognize certain conditions, and an excise intranasal lesion allows the doctor to offer an exact diagnosis.

Doctors may recommend this procedure if:

  • The patient recognizes an abnormality in their nasal cavity.
  • The doctor can’t offer a diagnosis based on observing the abnormality.

What To Expect

Patients will be under local or general anesthesia throughout the procedure to ensure their comfort. The surgeon will make a small incision inside the nostrils to access the lesion. They will then use specialized tools to collect extra tissue. Lastly, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from anesthesia. In the case of a biopsy, the surgeon will then send the tissue for testing and the patient should receive results within one or two weeks.

After the procedure, the patient may experience some swelling at the incision site. Oftentimes, patients are given pain medications to manage this discomfort.
