Septal Perforation Repair Procedure

The nasal septum is the thin wall that divides the nasal passages. Septal perforation is a medical condition where there is a hole in the nasal septum, resulting in various complications including nosebleeds, difficulty breathing, and loss of smell. The hole can be a result of a previous surgery, disease, nose picking, or other factors.

Sometimes this condition will heal on its own. However, in the case it does not heal on its own and is causing symptoms, surgery may become an option. Septal perforation repair is a surgical procedure that involves filling the perforation in the nasal septum.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

Patients may consider a septal perforation repair procedure if they have a hole in the nasal septum that is not healing on its own. If patients notice they have a perforated septum, it is better to seek medical help sooner rather than later, as waiting a prolonged period of time can result in the condition worsening. In terms of surgery, a doctor can determine if this procedure is necessary based on the size and location of the perforation and the associated symptoms.

Patients may consider a septal perforation repair procedure if:

  • The perforation is causing nosebleeds
  • The perforation is making it difficult to breathe
  • The patient is experiencing headaches or nausea
  • Conservative efforts are ineffective

What to Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. It is very important to review all instructions before the day of surgery to make sure you are prepared for the surgery. This procedure can be performed open or closed depending on the location of the perforation. After accessing the perforation, they will fill it with a graft made of tissue from another area of the nose.

During the recovery process, patients will be given saline for the nose and pain medications. Recovery differs from patient to patient, but it will typically take between two to three weeks. Patients should be careful to not aggressively blow their nose or sneeze during this time, as it can disrupt healing.
