Parathyroidectomy Procedure

Parathyroidectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of one or more parathyroid glands. The parathyroid gland is located in the neck, next to the two thyroid glands. This procedure is performed on patients who have been diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism, a condition in which the parathyroid glands create high amounts of parathyroid hormones in the bloodstream. This condition can be damaging and cause symptoms such as fragile bones, kidney stones, and excessive urination. Parathyroidectomy offers a solution to this condition by returning blood calcium levels to a healthy range.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

A parathyroidectomy is considered medically necessary when the parathyroid gland produces an excess amount of the parathyroid hormone. This results in too much calcium in the blood, which can lead to the following symptoms:

  • Weaker bones
  • Kidney stones
  • Heart and brain function

Fortunately, a parathyroidectomy is known to offer a valid solution to this condition.

Meet our Throat and Neck Doctors

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making a small incision at the neck to access the thyroid gland and the parathyroid glands. Next, the surgeon will assess the four parathyroid glands and remove any that are diseased. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will wake up.

The recovery process typically takes between 1 to 3 weeks. It is important that the patient keeps the incision site clean to prevent infection. Patients will be on a soft food diet in the days following the procedure to not irritate the throat. Patients will have a follow-up appointment to ensure the surgery was successful and everything is healing properly.
