Parotidectomy Procedure
When is this Procedure Necessary?
Tumors in the parotid glands are uncommon, but not completely rare. Both malignant and benign tumors can grow on these glands, and it is always important to get them checked by a specialist. If there is suspicion or confirmation of a tumor within the parotid gland, a parotidectomy may be required for both diagnostic and curative purposes. This includes benign tumors, which can cause facial pain and deformities if left untreated, as well as malignant tumors, which require immediate removal to prevent further spread.
Individuals experiencing recurrent infections or chronic inflammation of the salivary glands may also require a parotidectomy. Conditions like sialadenitis can lead to persistent pain and swelling that significantly impact quality of life. In cases where stones have formed within the ducts leading from the parotid gland into the mouth (parotid stones), a parotidectomy becomes necessary to alleviate symptoms including dry mouth and difficulty chewing.
