Tonsillectomy and Ear Tubes

Tonsillectomy and Ear Tubes – A tonsillectomy involves the surgical removal of the tonsils, which are lymphoid tissues at the back of the throat. It is typically recommended for patients with recurrent tonsillitis, sleep-disordered breathing, or enlarged tonsils causing airway obstruction. Ear tube placement (also called tympanostomy tubes) involves inserting small tubes into the eardrum to ventilate the middle ear and prevent fluid buildup. This procedure is commonly performed to treat chronic ear infections or persistent fluid that affects hearing.

When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?

Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.

A mastoidectomy is necessary if:

  • The patient has chronic mastoiditis
  • The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
  • The infection is spreading

What To Expect

Patients are placed under general anesthesia to remain asleep and comfortable. The surgeon begins by removing the tonsils through the mouth using a specialized surgical tool that cuts and cauterizes tissue to minimize bleeding. If ear tubes are also required, the surgeon makes a tiny incision in each eardrum. Any fluid collected behind the eardrum is gently suctioned out, and a small ventilation tube is inserted to help prevent future fluid buildup and improve hearing. No external incisions are made for either part of the procedure. After surgery, patients may have a sore throat, mild ear discomfort, and temporary changes in voice or swallowing. Recovery from tonsil removal generally takes one to two weeks, while recovery from ear tube placement is rapid, often within a day. Water precautions may be recommended to prevent infection while the tubes are in place.
