About Great Toe Arthrodesis

The goal of this procedure is to relieve pain, improve stability, and improve the function of the foot.

During this surgical procedure, a surgeon will remove the cartilage from both bones and then fuse them. Before a patient considers a procedure like a toe arthrodesis, many conservative options should first be considered and fully explored. If nothing else works, your doctor may suggest a great toe arthrodesis to prevent further injury.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

The metatarsophalangeal joint is located between the metatarsal bones in the foot and the phalanges, informally known as the toe bones. This joint is responsible for flexion and extension. This area can become painful due to overuse, arthritis, or anatomical abnormalities. Symptoms can include tenderness and swelling around the joint, as well as difficulty walking or bearing weight on the affected foot. Treatment options may vary depending on the cause and severity of the pain but can include rest, icing, physical therapy exercises, shoe inserts or orthotics, and medications for pain and inflammation relief.

In more severe cases, a surgical procedure like a great toe arthrodesis may be necessary. If you experience metatarsophalangeal joint pain, it is important to proactively seek treatment. This can prevent the pain from worsening over time.

Patients may consider undergoing a great toe arthrodesis if:

  • Conservative efforts are ineffective
  • They experience ongoing intense foot pain

Preparing for Your Procedure

Patients will be given general anesthesia so they will not experience pain during the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making a small incision above the metatarsophalangeal joint so they can examine it. Next, the surgeon will remove portions of the cartilage to realign the bones and fuse them using pins or screws. While this is a typical description of a toe arthrodesis surgery, the procedure may vary due to different circumstances.

After the procedure, patients may experience some discomfort so they will be instructed to take antibiotics and pain medication for a successful, comfortable recovery. Recovery times vary, but it will typically take between four to six weeks. After this, patients should be careful when exercising or participating in physical activities to ensure they do not further injure the area.
