What To Expect
Patients are under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision at the foot’s top, or the instep, to access the accessory navicular bone. The surgeon will carefully detach the accessory navicular bone from the tibial tendon and will separate the accessory from the navicular bone. If necessary, the surgeon may cut the tissue to successfully separate the two bones. When the goal of the procedure is achieved, the surgeon will close the incision, and the patient is removed from the anesthesia.
After the procedure, the foot is bandaged and put in a splint. Patients are expected to keep weight off the foot by using crutches in the weeks following. Typically, patients can return to their normal activity within 3-4 months. However, it is important to check with your surgeon for approval.
