Bone Marrow Biopsy (including Pathology) Procedure

A bone marrow biopsy is a surgical procedure to evaluate the health and composition of bone marrow. This procedure is often performed to detect different blood disorders such as leukemia, lymphoma, and anemia. During the procedure, the goal is to collect a small sample of both liquid and solid parts of the bone marrow. The sample will then be analyzed to identify any abnormalities.

Results obtained from a bone marrow biopsy are used to determine a condition and this information can help doctors determine the most effective treatment path. Depending on the results, follow-up treatment can vary significantly.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

A bone marrow biopsy may be recommended for a variety of reasons, primarily when there is a suspicion of cancer or blood disorder. Typically, doctors will perform a blood test before ordering a bone marrow biopsy. If a blood test shows irregular levels of red or white blood cells or irregular platelets, a bone marrow biopsy may be recommended next.

What To Expect

Prior to the procedure, the doctor will give the patient medicine to help them relax. The doctor will begin by cleaning the area and then inject numbing medicine into the surface of the bone. Next, the doctor will insert a biopsy needle into the bone to collect the bone marrow sample. When the procedure is completed, the doctor will put a bandage over the incision site.

After the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience pain at the site of the biopsy. This is manageable through over-the-counter pain medicine or doctor-prescribed medications. Patients may feel tired or weak in the days following, but they should feel normal again shortly. Patients should contact their doctor if they continue to feel unwell after a few days pass. Patients can expect results within a few weeks.
