Repair Patellar Tendon Procedure

The patellar tendon connects the bottom of the kneecap (patella) to the top of the shinbone (tibia). When this tendon is damaged, it can result in intense pain and prevent individuals from being able to walk or engage in many activities. Typically, surgical intervention is necessary for this type of injury, as this tendon cannot heal alone. Patients who suspect they have damaged their patellar tendon should seek medical attention immediately to undergo diagnostic testing and establish a proper treatment plan.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

Candidates for this procedure are individuals who have experienced a complete or partial tear of the patellar tendon. This injury most commonly occurs as a result of overuse or sudden injury. Patients with a patellar tendon tear often suffer from extreme symptoms, including swelling, debilitating pain, instability, and difficulty walking. Before surgery, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon will meet with the patient to perform diagnostic testing and will evaluate the injury. If the specialist believes surgical intervention is necessary, they will often recommend patellar tendon repair surgery.

Meet our Knee Doctors

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The orthopedic surgeon will begin by making an incision at the front of the knee to access the damaged tendon. Next, the surgeon will locate the patellar tendon and use specialized tools to reattach it using sutures or anchors carefully. If necessary, the surgeon will now remove any loose bodies or material that could cause any pain. When the goal of the surgery has been met, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

After the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience pain and swelling around the area. Patients will be given pain medication to manage any discomfort. Patients will wear an immobilizer or long knee brace to ensure the knee stays immobile in the weeks following. After the initial recovery, patients will join physical therapy to regain balance, build strength, and ensure proper movement. Generally, patients can return to an active lifestyle within 6-8 months.
