Hysteroscopy Procedure

Hysteroscopy is a commonly utilized diagnostic and therapeutic procedure in gynecology that involves the insertion of a thin telescope-like instrument, called a hysteroscope, into the uterus to examine its lining. This minimally invasive procedure allows for direct visualization and evaluation of the uterine cavity, helping physicians diagnose and treat various conditions such as abnormal bleeding, uterine polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or congenital abnormalities. By using specialized instruments through the hysteroscope, surgeons can also perform additional procedures during the same session, such as removing polyps or fibroids or correcting structural problems.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Doctors may recommend a hysteroscopy to patients who have abnormal Pap Results, abnormal bleeding, or bleeding after menopause. This procedure is considered medically necessary if the cause for irregular bleeding is unknown and other forms of diagnostic testing have not provided an explanation.

What To Expect

Patients will be given general or local anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The gynecologist will insert a thin, illuminated tube called a hysteroscope into the cervix and through the vaginal canal to access the uterine cavity. Once in position, carbon dioxide or fluid may be injected into the uterus to expand its walls for better visualization. The hysteroscope transmits real-time images of the uterus onto a screen, allowing the physician to identify any abnormalities such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or uterine anatomical issues. In some cases, biopsies or excisions can be performed during hysteroscopy using specialized tools inserted alongside the hysteroscope.
