Remove and Replace Breast Implants Procedure

The remove and replace breast implant procedure is a surgical technique commonly used in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. During this procedure, an old or damaged implant is removed from the body and replaced with a new one to improve aesthetics or functionality. The decision to undergo this procedure is typically made as a joint decision between the surgeon and the patient. There are a few reasons why a patient may choose to remove and replace their existing breast implants.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

The removal and replacement of implants are considered medically necessary in cases where the current implants have become damaged, infected, or are causing significant pain or discomfort to the patient. Other reasons for removal and replacement include changes in breast size preference or aesthetic concerns, excessive scarring around the implants, or dissatisfaction with the initial outcome of the surgery.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision around the circle of darker skin around the areola or beneath the breast. This decision is made before the surgery and is a conversation between the patient and the doctor. Next, the surgeon will remove the implants and any surrounding damaged scar tissue. Then the surgeon will place the new implants. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

During the recovery period, patients must adhere to strict post-operative care instructions to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications. This typically involves avoiding strenuous physical activities, taking prescribed medications as directed, attending follow-up appointments with the surgeon or healthcare provider, and monitoring for any signs of infection or adverse reactions. Often, patients experience tenderness for up to 6 weeks.
