Bankart Stabilization Procedure

Bankart stabilization is a surgical procedure performed on patients with chronic shoulder instability. This procedure may become necessary if a shoulder dislocation causes the anterior labrum to tear. During this surgery, the surgeon will reattach and tighten torn or detached labral tissue to stabilize the joint and prevent further dislocations. This procedure can be performed traditionally as an open procedure, or arthroscopically. An arthroscopic bankart stabilization is less invasive and the recovery time is faster. The nature of the procedure is typically dependent on what the doctor feels will yield the most successful results.

When is this Procedure Necessary?

Patients may consider a Bankart stabilization procedure in cases of recurrent shoulder dislocations or instability caused by a Bankart lesion. A Bankart lesion is a tear or detachment of the labrum, a ring of soft tissue that surrounds the shoulder joint. This procedure may become necessary if conservative therapies, such as physical therapy, are ineffective. Additionally, this procedure may be necessary if the joint is beyond repair and requires surgical intervention.

Patients may undergo a Bankart stabilization procedure for the following reasons:

  • They experience chronic shoulder joint instability
  • A dislocation or injury caused the anterior labrum to tear
  • Physical therapy and other conservative treatments were ineffective

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia during a Bankart Stabilization procedure to ensure their comfort. This procedure is typically performed arthroscopically which involves the use of a small camera to monitor the shoulder joint during the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision for the arthroscope and another to access the joint using small tools. The surgeon will reattach the torn labrum to its original position on the glenoid using anchors or sutures. This will ensure the stability of the joint.

After the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience pain, limited range of motion, and swelling. Patients are typically given anti-inflammatory pain medications to manage postoperative pain. Physical therapy also plays a crucial role in the recovery process, as it is necessary to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joint and improve mobility. It is very important for patients to closely follow all instructions.
