Achilles repair is a surgical procedure to repair a tear or rupture in the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon is the band of tissue that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. When this tendon is torn, it can make walking, jumping, and other regular movements very painful. Although this type of injury can occur for various reasons, it is most common in cases where patients suffer a traumatic or sports-inflicted injury. Sometimes, this injury may develop over time due to a degenerative condition such as tendinitis or tendinopathy.
Depending on the severity of the tear, this procedure can be performed differently. If the tear is more severe, the procedure may require an open approach. However, less severe tears can be treated through an arthroscopic approach.
When is This Procedure Necessary?
An Achilles repair procedure may become necessary if the tear can’t heal through conservative treatments. Before recommending this procedure, orthopedic specialists will typically first recommend pain medications and a temporary cast. If these therapies do not yield positive results, surgery is often the next step. Additionally, if the tear is due to a traumatic injury and is more severe, doctors may recommend that patients skip straight to surgery as holding off can lead to the condition worsening.

What To Expect
Patients will be under general or local anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The exact nature of the procedure may vary depending on the approach used by the surgeon. The overall goal of the procedure is to remove any damaged tissue and use sutures to reattach the tendon. When the procedure is completed, the surgeon will close the incision(s) and the patient will be removed from anesthesia.
After the procedure, patients will undergo a recovery period that can span 6-8 weeks. During this time, it is important that patients stay off their foot and closely follow all postoperative instructions. Physical therapy is often recommended to ensure a successful recovery.
