Repair extensor tendon (foot) Procedure

Extensor tendon repair is a surgical procedure used to treat injuries to the extensor tendons in the foot. The extensor tendons play a key role in our ability to lift our toes off the ground. When one of these tendons is injured, it can make walking and other simple movements very difficult. An injury to the extensor tendon can occur due to traumatic injury or as a result of overuse. Regardless of the cause of injury, extensor tendon repair surgery is often considered to offer relief to patients experiencing severe pain as the result of a damaged extensor tendon in the foot.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

If a patient suspects they have an injured extensor tendon, a doctor will typically begin by performing a physical examination. Depending on the result, the doctor may recommend the patient undergoes diagnostic imaging to identify the cause of the pain. If the tests reveal that an extensor tendon is severely damaged, the doctor may recommend that the patient considers an extensor tendon repair procedure.

The decision to opt for surgery depends on several factors, including the severity and location of the tendon damage, overall foot function, patient activity level, and treatment goals. Typically, non-surgical treatments like immobilization in a cast or splint and physical therapy are attempted initially; however, if these conservative measures fail to provide adequate relief or functionality after an appropriate recovery period, surgical intervention may be necessary.

What To Expect

Depending on the severity of the injury, patients will be under local or general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision over the affected area to access the damaged tendons. The injured ends of the tendon will be carefully sutured back together. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.

After the procedure, patients may experience pain around the incision site. Doctors will typically prescribe pain medications to help patients manage any discomfort. Patients are expected to wear a splint or cast to protect the foot during healing.
