Gastrocnemius Recession Procedure

Gastrocnemius recession is a surgical procedure to correct various conditions commonly found within the feet. The goal of this procedure is to lengthen the tendons and muscles to allow the foot to flex and comfortably move. Gastrocnemius recession involves making an incision in the calf region, followed by releasing a portion of the gastrocnemius muscle from its attachment to the achilles tendon. By doing so, the tightness and tension in the muscle are reduced, allowing for improved flexibility and range of motion.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Gastrocnemius recession becomes medically necessary in cases where patients suffer from tightness or contractures of the gastrocnemius muscles that restricts the ankle’s range of motion. This procedure offers a solution to many foot conditions where the patient struggles to lengthen their foot.

Patients may consider this surgical procedure if they have been diagnosed with one of the following conditions:

  • Flatfoot
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Toe walking
  • Plantar fasciitis

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision at the back of the lower leg and will carefully separate the calf muscle from the surrounding tissues. Next, a specific portion of the gastrocnemius tendon is surgically released or removed, allowing for elongation of the muscle. The surgeon then carefully sutures the remaining tendon back together using absorbable sutures to promote healing and restore proper alignment. The healing process for this procedure typically takes between 6-8 weeks.
