Sinus /Turbinates Unilateral (Simple) Procedure

Unilateral turbinate reduction (simple) is a surgical procedure that addresses issues related to enlarged nasal turbinates. Enlarged turbinates can obstruct airflow and lead to chronic congestion, snoring, and sinus infections. During this procedure, the surgeon will remove or reduce the excess tissue from the nasal cavity which will help to improve breathing and minimize negative symptoms.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

Unilateral turbinate reduction is considered medically necessary when a patient displays symptoms relating to chronic sinusitis or nasal obstruction due to enlarged turbinates on a singular side. Patients with chronic sinusitis often experience symptoms including snoring, difficulty breathing, and recurring infection. Oftentimes, patients can find relief through conservative therapies including nasal sprays or medications. However, if patients continue to experience pain or discomfort after experimenting with these medications, they may begin to consider further treatment.

What To Expect

Patients will be under local or general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. During a simple approach, the surgeon will access the enlarged turbinates through the nose. The surgeon will use specialized instruments to carefully remove excess tissue from the turbinate bone to open the airways. Once the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.

After unilateral turbinate reduction, patients may experience some swelling and discomfort in the days following. Patients will be given antibiotics and some are provided pain medications to manage any discomfort. If patients notice any abnormal symptoms, it is important that they promptly report it to their doctor.
