Repair Gluteus Medius Tendon (implants not included) Procedure
Gluteus medius tendon repair is a surgical procedure that aims to treat damage or tears in the gluteus medius tendon. This tendon is very important, as it connects the pelvis to the femur. When this tendon is damaged, it can reduce stability in the hip joint and complicate simple movements, such as walking, running, and jumping.
During this procedure, the surgeon will reattach the torn tendon using sutures or anchors. This will allow patients to engage in the activities they missed as a result of their injury. Gluteus medius tendon repair is a common procedure and has a high success rate, making it an ideal solution for patients experiencing persistent pain as the result of a torn gluteus medius tendon.
When is this Procedure Necessary?
Gluteus medius tendon repair may become necessary for patients who have sustained a severe tear or rupture of the gluteus medius tendon. This injury can occur for a variety of reasons but is most commonly a result of a traumatic injury or overuse. This injury can be extremely debilitating and can manifest symptoms including hip pain, weakness, difficulty walking or standing, and limited range of motion.
Candidates for this procedure include individuals who have sustained a severe injury to the gluteus medius tendon and those who have tried to find relief through conservative therapies without success.

What To Expect
The patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making an incision near the lateral hip region to access the damaged tendon. Next, the surgeon will use specialized instruments to remove any loose material before beginning to repair the damaged tendon. Next, the surgeon will place anchors on the femur and a suture will be attached to the damaged tendon. The surgeon will then pull the tendon down to its proper position before connecting it to the bone. When the surgery is complete, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.
Following the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience pain at the site of the incision. This is manageable through pain medications prescribed by the surgeon. Patients are expected to avoid putting weight on the hip for 4-6 weeks. After the initial recovery phase has passed, patients will begin a physical therapy program to help them regain function, improve stability, and build muscle.
