Chondroplasty Procedure

A knee chondroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure to remove damaged knee cartilage. With age, our joints naturally degenerate and this can cause the cartilage to deteriorate. Without the cushion of cartilage, the bones rub against each other causing discomfort. This procedure offers a solution to patients suffering from debilitating degenerative knee pain.

Compared to traditional surgeries, a knee chondroplasty is less invasive. This gives patients the ability to find relief without lengthy recovery time and large incisions. At Smith Medical, we are proud to offer a knee chondroplasty procedure as well as other minimally invasive options. When is this Procedure Necessary?

Patients who experience pain due to a degenerative knee have plenty of options. Your doctor will typically instruct you to explore conservative therapies before any surgery. This may include pain medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes. Although these therapies may offer temporary pain relief, the pain can ultimately come back with time.

If patients do not find lasting relief from conservative therapies, they may consider a knee chondroplasty. This procedure is more commonly performed on older individuals who suffer from age-related degeneration. However, it is sometimes performed on younger athletes involved in high-impact sports.

A chondroplasty of the knee may be necessary if:

  • Conservative therapies were ineffective
  • The patient is experiencing debilitating pain as a result of their knee condition
  • The patient has significant cartilage damage
  • The patient experiences swelling in the joints

Preparing for Your Procedure

The patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout. During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision around the knee joint to access the affected area. The surgeon will then insert an arthroscope or other device to help them view the area throughout the procedure. The surgeon will use special small tools to access the joint and remove damaged cartilage or bone fragments. Once the surgeon successfully removed all the fragments, they will close the incision and remove the patient from the anesthesia.

Patients are typically given pain medications to manage any pain or discomfort during the recovery period. Depending on how the patient feels, they may use crutches in the days following the surgery. Typically, recovery takes around three weeks.
