When is This Procedure Necessary?

Patients may consider an orchiectomy procedure for a few reasons. The most common reason for orchiectomy is for the treatment of testicular cancer, especially when the disease has spread beyond the testicle. In such cases, removal of the affected testicle can prevent the further spread of cancerous cells and improve patient outcomes.

Other reasons for orchiectomy include:

  • Male breast cancer
  • Gender-affirming surgery
  • Hormone levels

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make a small incision in the scrotum to access the testicles. The surgeon will then remove one or both testicles through the incision. When the goal of the procedure has been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they wake up from the anesthesia.

The orchiectomy recovery process involves multiple stages, beginning immediately after the surgical procedure and continuing for several weeks. Patients typically experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the scrotal area following surgery, which can be managed with pain medications and ice packs. Patients need to follow their healthcare provider’s instructions regarding wound care and activity restrictions to promote proper healing. As the incision site heals, patients may gradually begin to resume normal activities while avoiding strenuous exercise or lifting heavy objects during the initial recovery period.
