Cervical Conization (LEEP) Procedure

Cervical conization, also known as a cone biopsy, is a quick procedure to collect abnormal tissue from the cervix. This procedure is often called a “cone biopsy” because it involves removing a cone-shaped portion of tissue from the cervix for diagnostic purposes. This is a fairly simple procedure that does not require invasive surgical measures. Instead, this procedure is commonly recommended to patients who receive an irregular result from their annual Pap smear. This procedure serves diagnostic and treatment purposes, as it removes the potentially cancerous tissue and collects it for further testing.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A cervical conization procedure is considered medically necessary in cases where patients receive irregular results from their annual Pap smear. A Pap smear is a diagnostic procedure performed by an OB/GYN to observe the cells within the cervix, which could reveal indications of cervical cancer.

What To Expect

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will use a scalpel to collect abnormal tissue from the cervix. The procedure is quick and typically takes less than 20 minutes. The surgeon may have to stitch up the area to prevent excess bleeding. When the doctor has collected the sample of tissue, they will then send it to a lab to run diagnostic tests. The patient should expect to hear results between 1-2 weeks.

After the procedure, patients may experience discomfort which can be managed through a course of anti-inflammatory pain medications. It may take up to a week for patients to return to full mobility due to discomfort in the vaginal region. Bleeding, spotting, and cramping are normal symptoms during the recovery process. If patients experience any abnormal or severe symptoms, it is important to consult the doctor.
