About Lumbar Laminectomy

This procedure is typically performed on individuals who have osteoarthritis or another degenerative spine condition. If a spinal bone is affected by a patient’s arthritis, osteophytes also known as bone spurs, may develop. These can take up significant space in the spinal canal resulting in discomfort due to increased pressure on the spine. In addition to back pain, these osteophytes can manifest pain that radiates down the legs, making it difficult to walk or bend over.

During a lumbar laminectomy, the surgeon will remove the lamina to open more space within the spinal canal. This procedure is also referred to as decompression surgery because it removes some of the pressure off of the spinal cord and nearby nerves. Since this is a surgical procedure, patients should experiment with different conservative therapies. A mix of physical therapy, anti-inflammatory pain medications, and hot and cold therapy are excellent ways to manage pain without surgery. However, if these methods do not work, the patient may be a candidate for surgery.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A lumbar laminectomy is not recommended for all patients with osteophytes. Patients with radiating pain can benefit from this procedure because it will remove the pressure on their spinal cord causing leg pain. However, patients with only back pain will not experience the same benefits because their pain is from arthritis, which is not curable. Patients may want to consider this procedure if:

  • Conservative treatments do not provide relief
  • The pain has radiated into your legs
  • Standing has become difficult
  • Irregular bowel movements

If you experience lower back pain, it is important to consult your doctor early on so they can begin treatment.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Prior to your lumbar laminectomy, you will undergo testing to ensure you are healthy and capable of undergoing an arthroplasty. After approval, your doctor will give you a list of instructions for the day of your procedure. Since this procedure is performed under anesthesia, it is important to closely follow the instructions, especially any directions regarding fasting before surgery. Additionally, patients will need a designated driver to bring them home as they will not be able to drive after the procedure.

The surgeon will begin by making a small incision and moving the muscle away from the spine. Next, the surgeon will use small tools to carefully remove osteophytes that are causing pressure on the spinal cord or surrounding nerves. The surgeon may also remove or correct other areas of concern as well.

After the procedure has concluded, you will be given pain medications to manage discomfort. Many patients will also participate in physical therapy in the weeks following surgery to ensure a safe recovery.
