Lumbar Fusion 1 Level Procedure

A one-level lumbar fusion is a surgical procedure that involves the fusion of two vertebrae in the lumbar spine. This procedure is typically recommended for individuals who have a degenerative spine condition including spinal stenosis or a herniated disc. The overall goal of this surgical procedure is to increase stability and mobility in the lumbar spine.

As with any spine surgery, patients are encouraged to try conservative treatment methods before surgery. Treatments including hot and cold therapy, physical therapy, and pain medication are effective methods to manage back pain. However, patients may consider a spinal fusion if conservative methods are ineffective. Although spine surgery is often an effective option, there are risks associated with it so it should never be a patient’s first choice.

When is This Procedure Necessary?

A one-level lumbar fusion is typically recommended for patients who are suffering from chronic lumbar back pain as the result of a degenerative spine condition. Initially, doctors typically suggest patients experiment with different conservative therapies. This can help patients manage pain and improve mobility in the spine. If these methods are ineffective, they may consider surgery. Patients may be a candidate for this surgical procedure if a degenerative spine condition is causing severe pain along the lumbar spine.

Patients may consider this procedure if:

  • You experience chronic lumbar back pain as a result of a degenerative spine condition
  • The pain does not react to extensive conservative treatment and therapies
  • The condition is hindering your ability to be mobile and active

Preparing for Your Procedure

The patient will be under general anesthesia throughout the procedure to ensure their comfort. During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision along your side or lower back to access the affected vertebrae. Once the surgeon has accessed the target area, they will remove the intervertebral disc from between two vertebrae. They will then place a bone graft between these two vertebrae. This graft can be made from bone or using a synthetic material. The surgeon will then use screws to secure the vertebrae in place. When all adjustments are made, the surgeon will close the incision.

After the surgery, it is normal for patients to experience pain in the days and weeks following. It is important to prioritize rest and ensure you are following all directions provided by the doctor. It will typically take between 4-6 weeks for patients to experience relief. Although the initial pain after surgery might feel more severe than it did before, it is important to remember that it will go away and heal with time.

As far as what patients can do to improve the recovery period, they should ensure to be responsible with medication, including pain medication and antibiotics. Additionally, surgeons often recommend that patients participate in physical therapy to ensure they have a successful recovery. This is also an effective remedy to increase mobility and build back strength after such a serious surgical procedure.
