Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery with Partial Synovectomy

Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery with Partial Synovectomy is a minimally invasive procedure performed to treat shoulder pain and inflammation caused by synovitis—excess inflammation of the synovial membrane lining the joint. Using small incisions, a tiny camera called an arthroscope is inserted into the shoulder joint to provide a clear view. Specialized instruments are then used to remove (partially excise) the inflamed synovial tissue (partial synovectomy) and address any other joint issues, such as damaged cartilage or loose bodies. This procedure helps reduce pain, swelling, and stiffness while improving shoulder function. The minimally invasive approach typically results in less postoperative pain, smaller scars, and faster recovery compared to open surgery.

When Is a Mastoidectomy Necessary?

Patients may consider a mastoidectomy if they have mastoiditis and it is not responding to antibiotics. If left untreated, the infection could spread to other areas of the skull. Therefore, it is important to be proactive in your treatment and ensure to consult your physician on different treatment options.

A mastoidectomy is necessary if:

  • The patient has chronic mastoiditis
  • The patient’s condition is not responding to antibiotics
  • The infection is spreading

What To Expect

Patients are under general anesthesia. Several small incisions are made around the shoulder, and an arthroscope is inserted to view the joint. Using specialized tools, the surgeon removes inflamed or damaged portions of the synovial membrane (the tissue lining the joint) while preserving healthy tissue. Other necessary repairs can also be performed during the same procedure. After all work is complete, the incisions are closed and covered with sterile dressings. Following surgery, patients may experience mild swelling, soreness, and limited mobility. A sling is often used temporarily, and physical therapy is recommended to restore function.
