Tennis Elbow (lateral debridement) Procedure
Tennis elbow debridement is a surgical procedure that aims to clear out the worn tendon from the elbow joint. Tennis elbow is a common orthopedic condition characterized by pain and inflammation in the forearm due to microtears in the tendons. Tennis elbow is a common condition that develops due to repetitive movements of the wrist or arms, hence the reason for its name. This condition may also develop as a result of banging your elbow, although less common.
This procedure can be performed arthroscopically or open. In an arthroscopic approach, the surgeon will use a small camera to see the joint, allowing it to be less invasive. It is important to know that surgical intervention is often only recommended in cases of severe damage. Oftentimes, patients with tennis elbow can find relief through a course of conservative therapies.

Tennis elbow debridement is performed under local or general anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout. The size of the incision is dependent on the surgical approach utilized by the surgeon. The surgeon will make an incision along the elbow to access the damaged tendon. Next, they will begin removing damaged tissue from the area, as well as remove any bony growths that might have developed. The surgeon will then reconnect any parts of the tendon that detached. Once complete, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia.
The recovery process is an important part of finding relief. After the procedure, patients may experience pain in the joint, and this can be managed using prescribed pain medications. After the initial recovery, patients will begin a physical therapy program to improve function and ensure mobility within the joint. A complete recovery can take between 4-6 months.
