Foot/Ankle arthrotomy
Foot/ Ankle arthrotomy involves making an incision over the anterior or lateral aspect of the ankle, careful dissection down to the joint capsule, and opening the capsule to access the ankle joint. The surgeon can then irrigate the joint, remove infected or damaged tissue, or address mechanical problems. After completing the procedure, the joint capsule and overlying tissues are closed.

As with most surgical procedures, it is highly recommended that patients first consider conservative treatment options. Although you cannot treat underlying arthritis, it is possible to find ways to manage your pain. Often, patients find relief from conservative options including physical therapy, hot and cold therapy, and anti-inflammatory pain medications.
If these methods are ineffective, you may begin to consider surgery. Depending on your condition, your surgeon will recommend the most effective, least invasive treatment path. Patients are placed under general or regional anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the affected joint in the foot or ankle. The joint capsule is opened to allow direct access for removal of damaged tissue, drainage of infection, or repair of joint structures. Once the necessary treatment is complete, the joint capsule and skin are closed with sutures, and a sterile dressing is applied. Post-surgery, patients may need to keep weight off the affected foot or ankle for a period of time. Swelling, stiffness, and soreness are common early in recovery. Physical therapy may be prescribed to restore mobility.
