Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) with Image-Guided Navigation is an advanced, minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis and other sinus disorders that do not respond to medical therapy. The surgery involves the use of a small endoscope inserted through the nostrils to access and remove obstructions in the sinuses, improving drainage and function. With the aid of image-guided navigation, the surgeon uses preoperative CT scans combined with real-time tracking technology to map the patient’s sinus anatomy during the procedure. This allows for enhanced precision and safety, particularly in cases involving distorted anatomy, previous surgeries, or proximity to critical structures such as the eyes or brain. Image guidance helps ensure more accurate instrument placement, reduces surgical risk, and improves overall outcomes.

Qué esperar

Patients are placed under general anesthesia to ensure complete comfort during the procedure. Once anesthesia takes effect, the surgeon gently inserts a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) through the nostrils to visualize the sinus passages without making any external incisions. Using the camera for guidance, the surgeon carefully inserts specialized surgical tools through the nostrils to remove blockages such as polyps, scar tissue, or thickened mucous membranes. The openings to the sinuses are widened to restore natural drainage and improve airflow. After all targeted areas are treated, the instruments and endoscope are withdrawn, and the nasal passages are gently packed or dressed if needed to control bleeding. Following surgery, patients may experience nasal congestion, mild bleeding, and sinus pressure for several days. Saline rinses and prescribed medications will help keep the nasal passages clean and reduce swelling. Most patients can return to normal activities in about one week, though complete internal healing may take several weeks.
