Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will make an incision in the abdomen to place the catheter, and will then make a tunnel under the skin to an exit site. Once the goals of the procedure have been achieved, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be monitored as they are removed from the anesthesia.
After undergoing peritoneal dialysis catheter placement, patients typically experience some discomfort and soreness at the site of insertion. It is important for these individuals to follow strict post-operative care instructions in order to ensure a smooth recovery process.
