A subtalar joint arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows visual examination and treatment of the subtalar joint. The subtalar joint connects two of the tarsal bones of the foot. Overuse or injury may cause this joint to become inflamed, resulting in debilitating pain during movement. A subtalar joint arthroscopy can provide a specific diagnosis and help doctors make an informed treatment decision. An arthroscopy can be used as a diagnostic tool in itself or as a tool during correctional surgery. Oftentimes, a surgeon will use an arthroscope to remove loose bodies and repair ligaments.

Subtalar joint arthroscopy is typically reserved for cases of persistent and debilitating pain that has not responded to conservative treatment measures. Prior to this procedure, patients will undergo extensive diagnostic imaging and tests to ensure an arthroscopy is necessary. Oftentimes, damaged cartilage and instability around the subtalar joint warrant surgical intervention.

Patients will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure. The surgeon will begin by making a small incision at the joint to allow for the insertion of the arthroscope, followed by another small incision to allow access for specialized tools. Depending on the goal of the procedure, the surgeon will remove damaged cartilage, reattach torn ligaments, or both. Once the surgery is complete, the surgeon will close the incision and the patient will be removed from anesthesia.
 
After the procedure, patients may experience discomfort around the ankle joint. Typically, surgeons will prescribe pain medications to help patients manage this. Patients are expected to wear a splint around the ankle for 2-3 weeks to prevent movement and ensure proper recovery. Oftentimes, patients will engage in a physical therapy program to increase mobility and ensure proper function.
