Elbow arthroscopy is a surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various elbow conditions. This procedure involves the insertion of a small camera to allow the medical professional to observe the area and/or perform a surgical procedure without the need for large incisions. An elbow arthroscopy is often used to treat tennis elbow, ligament tears, loose bodies, and osteoarthritis. This minimally invasive procedure offers many benefits compared to traditional surgical procedures, including smaller incisions, shorter recovery time, and less risk of complications.

During an elbow arthroscopy, the patient will be under general anesthesia. The surgeon will begin by inserting a small camera (an arthroscope) into the elbow joint. This camera will allow the surgeon to monitor the area throughout the procedure. Next, the surgeon will use specialized tools to make any necessary adjustments, including removing loose bodies, cartilage, and unhealthy tissues and releasing muscle contractures. The patient is removed from anesthesia once the procedure is finished.

After the procedure, the patient may experience pain in the elbow joint. Doctors will typically prescribe anti-inflammatory pain medications to help patients manage discomfort in the days following. Oftentimes, physical therapy is recommended to help patients improve mobility and build strength.
