It is important to remember that although these therapies may temporarily minimize pain, they can’t fix the tear. If patients continue to experience pain after trying a collection of conservative therapies, they may be a candidate for rotator cuff repair surgery.

  • One or more muscles surrounding the shoulder are torn.
  • They experience constant pain or weakness in the affected shoulder.
  • Conservative therapies did not provide significant relief.
  • The tear is not significant enough to require a more intense procedure.

There are many ways in which a rotator cuff repair procedure can be performed. Depending on the surgeon and the severity of the tear, it can be performed through an open incision or arthroscopically. Either way, the patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure.

During an arthroscopic approach, the surgeon will make a small incision around the shoulder joint. They will then use a camera and specialized instruments to access the damaged area. To begin repair, they will then reattach the tendon to the head of the humorous. Once the area is repaired, the incision will be closed and the patient will be removed from the anesthesia. During an open approach, the surgeon will make a larger incision and will have more access to the area.
Depending on the severity of the tear and the surgical approach, the recovery may vary. The surgeon will typically provide a comprehensive recovery plan including pain medications and physical therapy, if necessary.
