Angela Bohnen, MD, FAANS, is a revered Denver neurosurgeon at Smith Medical Direct Specialty Care specializing in treating spine and brain conditions. She is well educated in a range of conditions and techniques, starting with different techniques for complex spine surgery at Northwestern University, in addition to attending a prestigious fellowship in neuro-oncology at the Mayo Clinic where she studied under internationally renowned mentor Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa.
During her residency at Northwestern University, Dr. Bohnen pioneered a rotation abroad in Rome, Italy, facilitating further understanding of international health care and developing collaborative relationships with international colleagues. She is a board-certified doctor by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
Dr. Bohnen’s area of focus spans a range of spine conditions, including herniated discs, lumbar stenosis, radiculopathy, sciatica, and other problems that cause pain in the back, legs, neck, and arms.
She prefers focusing on minimally invasive surgery options to minimize the recovery time and healing process for patients when surgery is necessary. Dr. Bohnen is also an advocate for neuromodulation, including spinal cord stimulation, to relieve chronic pain when surgery is not possible or when it has failed to control symptoms.
She has a deep interest in helping patients who have conditions such as primary brain tumors such as gliomas, meningiomas, and pituitary tumors, as well as skull base and metastatic brain tumors.
Her clinical expertise is in awake craniotomies and brain mapping for eloquent tumors. She is also one of the first neurosurgeons in Colorado to provide Gamma Tile therapy at the time of surgery to implant radiation tiles inside the brain at the site of the tumor.
