Tympanoplasty Procedure
A tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves using an endoscope or microscope to repair a ruptured eardrum. During this procedure, the surgeon will fix any tiny holes in the eardrum preventing the patient from being able to hear. Any holes in the eardrum disrupt the typical hearing process since they prevent vibration.
When is this Procedure Necessary?
A patient may consider a tympanoplasty if there is significant damage to the eardrum due to infection, trauma, or injury. The eardrum plays a crucial role in transmitting sound waves so when it is damaged, it can result in severe hearing loss. A tympanoplasty can allow patients to regain their hearing and repair any developing infection.
A tympanoplasty may be necessary if:
- The patient has an infection that is not
- responding to antibiotics or eardrops
- Fluid has accumulated in the ear
- The patient lost hearing due to an injury or trauma
The best way to determine the correct treatment path is to visit your doctor. They will be able to perform diagnostic testing and offer informed opinions and suggestions.

Preparing for Your Procedure
Before the procedure, the patient will undergo hearing tests. During a tympanoplasty, the patient will be under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout. The surgeon will begin by filling any holes with a graft. This graft may be artificial or tissue taken from an area around the ear. Over time, the eardrum will grow new tissue, using the graft as a foundation for it. The surgeon will then close the incision and the patient will be taken off the anesthesia.
Most patients will begin to notice improvements in the weeks following surgery. Your surgeon will provide a list of instructions so you can properly care for your ear after surgery. It is very important to closely follow all directions to ensure a successful recovery.
